First Book is a national non-profit organization that seeks to give new books to children from low-income families at no cost
In 2003, the United Nations launched its Literacy Decade, an effort to increase literacy levels around the world. In declaring the initiative, the U.N. cited the role literacy plays in promoting peace, respect and exchange in a globalizing world. One American group that is playing an important role in promoting literacy in the U.S. hopes to soon expand that effort worldwide. 

VOA's Monaliza Noormohamadi has more on First Book, a group working to promote reading among low-income families.
